Persistence of the dens as the body of C1. A case report of a rare anomaly

A patient with persistence of the dens as the body of the first cervical vertebra is described. This is an extremely rare anomaly and in this patient was associated with instability of the first cervical vertebra. Embryologic considerations and the clinical implication- of this anomaly are discussed.
