"Bare sclera" excision followed by 90Sr beta irradiation has been used at Bellevue Hospital for more than 20 years as standard therapy for pterygia. Primary treatment was successful in approximately 90% of cases, and 80% of the failures were salvaged by a second course. This policy is recommended for similar patient populations.
