OPINION

Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Recent Advances in Diagnosis with Iodized Oil

Joseph J. Bookstein M.D.1

1 Department of Radiology, UCSD Medical Center, 225 Dickinson Street, San Diego, CA 92103

This opinion presents an overview of recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Japan. The use of Ethiodol (iodized ethyl esters of the fatty acid of poppyseed oil) for hepatic angiography in diagnosing and treating (combined with chemotherapeutic agents) HCC has been reported. Ethiodol has been found to localize in HCC and remain there for long periods. The implications of these findings are discussed.
