In 1966, he moved on to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond to serve as chairman of the division of radiotherapy and oncology and professor of radiology for 4 years. Then in 1970, he began what is now a 28-year relationship with the University of Minnesota, when he was named professor of radiation oncology and head and clinical chief of the Department of Therapeutic Radiology for the University and chief of therapeutic radiology service for the University of Minnesota Hospitalspositions he still holds today.
Dr Levitt's leadership experience is vast. He is a man who leads by example and with unwavering dedication. In 1990, Dr Levitt was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society (National). He has been president of the American Cancer Society (Minnesota Division), the American Radium Society, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiologists, the International Society of Radiation Oncology, and the Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiation Oncology Programs. Since 1963, Dr Levitt has served as a consultant radiotherapist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in each of the four cities in which he has lived.
The impact Dr Levitt has had on the field of radiology is evident by the many distinguished honors that he has received. He was a recipient of the American College of Radiology's Gold Medal and is a fellow of the American College of Radiology, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists in England, and an Honorary Professor of Xian Medical University in Xian, China. He also holds an Honorary Membership in the Deutsche Roentgengesellschaft, awarded in Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1997, Dr Levitt was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Colorado, the same institution that presented to him its Distinguished Service award in 1988. He received the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology's Gold Medal in 1991 and received the Janeway Award from the American Radium Society in 1989.
Dr Levitt has been a visiting professor at many national and international institutions. He has written or co-written 249 articles and authored or co-authored 10 books and 15 book chapters. He is a reviewer for RadioGraphics and associate editor for American Journal of Clinical Oncology and International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics.
In 1991, Dr Levitt was elected to the RSNA Board of Directors. He served as the liaison for annual meeting arrangements until being named chairman of the Board of Directors in 1996. Prior to serving on the Board, he was a member of the Refresher Course Committee from 1968 to 1976. He then served as chairman of the Program Committee, Therapeutic Radiology, from 1977 to 1980 and again in 1991. He also spent 1 year as 2nd Vice President in 1986.
Dr Levitt is tirelessly supported by his devoted wife, Solveig, and their children: his daughters, Mary Jean, an associate in the Minnesota Attorney General's office, and Jennifer, a psychiatrist and assistant professor at UCLA; his son, Scott, a consultant for the wine industry; Solveig's son, Eric, a consultant in education; and her daughter, Sonja, an engineer with Boeing and American.
