ACR Appropriateness Criteria

The first volume of the ACR Appropriateness Criteria—guidelines designed to assist in decision making about appropriate radiologic imaging and radiation oncology treatment from a clinical perspective—was published in 1995. Volume 2 was published in 1996. In 2000, ACR will publish a book that reviews the topics covered in the first two volumes and includes new topics.

The Appropriateness Criteria are important to the quality of radiology practice and patient care. Accordingly, when the ACR indicated that it is interested in the widest possible dissemination of the Criteria and asked RSNA to distribute information about the Criteria and the new volume with the mailing of the journal Radiology, the Society agreed to do so.

With this January 2000 issue of Radiology, you will find an additional printed piece produced and funded by the ACR. This material contains an introduction to the Appropriateness Criteria as well as a sample topic from each of the 10 expert panels. With the June 2000 issue of Radiology, you will find the most current volume of the ACR Appropriateness Criteria.

This distribution of the ACR Appropriateness Criteria is intended to serve the needs of the members of both societies. Ultimately, it is intended to enhance the quality of care in our specialty and to improve our diagnostic and treatment services to our patients. It is with these same goals in mind that RSNA and ACR have collaborated on the development of the public information Web site, Radiology Resource (www.radiologyresource.org). Our societies will continue to work together on special projects for the benefit of radiology and our patients.
