From 1961 to 1981, Dr Finby was director of the Department of Radiology at St Lukes Hospital, New York, NY, a university hospital affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York, NY. Under his aegis and largely due to his foresight and energetic tenacity, he propelled St Lukes Hospital into the forefront of the development of angiography and interventional radiology in the late 1950s and 1960s. As radiologic technology explosively advanced in the 1970s and 1980s, Dr Finby was responsible for the rapid growth of these modalities at St Lukes and later at Roosevelt Hospital, New York, NY, as it merged with St Lukes in 1980.
An able researcher, as well as an administrator, Dr Finby made multiple contributions to radiology journals and books, particularly in the field of angiography. Under his guidance, the department grew exponentially both in teaching and in clinical research. He was appointed clinical professor of radiology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.
In 1962, he was elected a fellow of the American College of Radiology. He was the chairman of the Section on Radiology at the New York Academy of Medicine from 1970 to 1971, and he was president of the New York Roentgen Society at the same time.
Dr Finby was chairman of the Residency Training Program of the New York Roentgen Society from 1973 to 1974, a member of the Technical Advisory Committee to the Commissioner of Health of New York City from 1979 to 1980, and a member of the New York County Medical Society Board of Censors and Comitia Minora from 1979 to 1982. He served on the New York City Mayors Technical Advisory Committee on Radiation from 1975 to 1979.
Dr Finby was a superb teacher and a man of great heart and integrity. His mentoring and guidance of a large number of residents and staff are fondly and lovingly remembered and appreciated.
He is survived by his wife, Norma.
