Special Communication

The Radiological Society of North America 87th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting Sunday, November 25 to Friday, November 30, 2001 McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois1

Jerry P. Petasnick, MD, President, Radiological Society of North America

1 In accordance with the bylaws of the Radiological Society of North America (section 6.12), the Board of Directors has appointed a Committee on Nominations. In 2001, the Committee on Nominations consists of R. Nick Bryan, MD, PhD, Chairman, Philadelphia, Pa; C. Douglas Maynard, MD, Winston-Salem, NC; and Hedvig Hricak, MD, PhD, New York, NY. Suggestions for nominations should be addressed to the Chairman.

Index terms: Radiological Society of North America, 87th scientific assembly and annual meeting • Special Communications

The digital revolution will intersect with science and medicine as radiology professionals from around the globe gather together in Chicago, Ill, in November for the world’s largest medical meeting. The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) hosts its 87th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting at McCormick Place, and, as usual, the superior exhibits, hands-on workshops, educational opportunities, and networking among the nearly 60,000 attendees is already generating a great deal of excitement in the radiologic community. For most, the meeting is an exhilarating experience—an opportunity to share ideas, to network with peers, and to become inspired by the leaders in radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

This year, a new interactive classroom and new courses in thoracic imaging, magnetic resonance (MR) safety considerations, intravascular brachytherapy, and women’s health in imaging will enhance the cutting-edge scientific program. The RSNA revels in celebrating important milestones, and each year we strive to highlight the best the radiology profession has to offer.

For more than a year, four major RSNA committees—the Program Committee, the Refresher Course Committee, the Education Exhibits Committee, and the Electronic Communications Committee—have been planning the scientific and educational portion of RSNA 2001, while the Technical Exhibits Committee has overseen the development of the Technical Exhibits. This year, we will travel "From Science to Patient Care" to show how scientific breakthroughs and new technologic innovations lead to better results for our patients.

Of the more than 7,500 abstracts submitted, only the very best will be chosen for the meeting. We are committed to offering an impressive array of lectures, courses, orations, symposia, panel discussions, poster sessions, paper presentations, education exhibits, and workshops. A maximum of 81 hours of category 1 continuing medical education (CME) credit are available toward the American Medical Association (AMA) Physician’s Recognition Award. Additional category 2 CME credit is also available. Since 50 hours of CME credit are needed for the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award, a radiologist can easily earn the entire amount, and then some, by attending this one meeting—the RSNA annual meeting!

In a continuing effort to serve our membership and to remain at the forefront of radiologic science and technology, the RSNA Board of Directors has approved several changes for the upcoming meeting. Those changes include new hours, a late registration fee, new courses, and an interactive classroom.

New Hours and Late Registration Fee. The Scientific Assembly will return to a start time of 8:30 AM, rather than 8:00 AM. In addition, the technical exhibits will close earlier—at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 29, instead of the usual 6:00 PM closing. This will help ease the burden on exhibitors and expedite the dismantling process. In addition, a late fee of $100 will be added for those registering on site at the conference, including RSNA members who usually pay no fee. Students are eligible to register on site at no charge with proper student identification.

This year, more than 200 Scientific Paper and Poster Sessions will feature more than 2,000 scientific abstracts in both oral and poster formats representing 14 radiologic subspecialties. The Scientific Papers and Posters highlight completed research with a comprehensive report, a work-in-progress report of research underway with initial defined results, or a brief report of a particular new aspect or understanding of clinical radiology. The variety of presentation formats allows for increased flexibility and improved communication of ideas.

A selection of 283 Refresher Courses will include 40 limited-attendance workshops that feature intensive demonstration, discussion, and expanded question-and-answer opportunities. The highlights of this year’s Refresher Course selection are two new Categorical Courses: "Thoracic Imaging—Chest and Cardiac" and "Practical MR Safety Considerations for Physicians, Physicists, and Technologists."

More than 1,000 Education Exhibits will help teach or review radiologic signs, pathologic correlations, procedures, techniques, treatments, and interventions or other aspects related to the practice of imaging.

The infoRAD section will provide a dynamic learning experience featuring more than 120 educational and commercial exhibits showcasing hands-on computer-assisted self-instruction, Web-based applications, clinical software, virtual reality, and the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Symposium. The IHE vendor demonstration and educational sessions will showcase the expansion of sharing of information across systems. The IHE Symposium begins at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, November 28, and concludes at 5:00 PM on Thursday, November 29. Highlights include sessions on the IHE initiative, using IHE to implement integrated systems, management strategies for integration, technology financing, patient privacy and data security (including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act [HIPAA]), the electronic medical record, outcomes analysis, structured reporting, voice recognition, Web-based medical education, computer-aided diagnosis, data mining, and personal digital assistants. Hands-on computer workshops will be conducted by industry leaders to give attendees the opportunities to experience the latest products available. These workshops will include computer-assisted diagnosis, radiology information systems, picture archiving and communications systems, integration of computers into the radiology practice, and training on state-of-the-art computer equipment.

The printed 2001 Scientific Program will be dedicated to the memory of Sadek K. Hilal, MD, PhD. The Annual Oration in Diagnostic Radiology will be dedicated to the memory of Howard J. Pollack, MD. The Annual Oration in Radiation Oncology will be dedicated to the memory of Simon Kramer, MD. The Gold Medalists will receive their awards on Tuesday afternoon. They are M. Paul Capp, MD, Ernest J. Ferris, MD, and Mutsumasa Takahashi, MD. The Honorary Members for RSNA 2001 are Michael R. Sage, MD, South Australia, Australia; Carl B. Standertskjöld-Nordenstam, MD, Helsinki, Finland; and Lenny K. A. Tan, MD, Singapore.

Wednesday’s session is "Workforce Crisis: Strategies for Management," presented by Salvatore Martino, EdD, RT(R), and Lynne Roy, MBA, CNMT, FSNMTS.

The Associated Sciences program will also include a series of eight refresher courses designed primarily for radiologists and managers and supervisors of radiology departments. Three new courses will be introduced this year: "HIPAA and Radiology: The Operational Impact," "Continuity of Care," and "Digital Technology for Diagnostic Imaging." The other five courses in the refresher course series are "Economic Implications of Regulatory Change," "Current Challenges in Radiology and Planning and Design," "Asset Management for High-Technology Systems," "Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce) the Way Roentgen Would Have Wanted It," and "The Process of Managing Outcomes."
