Diagnosis Please Certificate of Recognition Awarded to Four Individuals

Anthony V. Proto, MD

Index terms: Diagnosis Please

The 4th year of Diagnosis Please cases (cases 37–48) was completed in March 2002. I am delighted to announce that for the first time we have identified more than one individual who has submitted the highest number of correct answers: Mustafa Kemal Demir, MD , Milton Rafael Fuentealba, MD , Douglas Scott Katz, MD , and Stefanos B. Lachanis, MD. Diagnosis Please began in April 1998 (1). Since then, former winners have been Sergio Julio Moguillansky, MD, for cases 1–12, Seyed Alireza Emamian, MD, PhD, for cases 13–24, and Sergio Julio Moguillansky, MD, again for cases 25–36 (24). We plan to continue this feature in Radiology for as long as we have authors who are interested in preparing cases. Any author interested in so doing should contact me so that we can discuss the case to determine if it is appropriate.

We extend our heartiest congratulations to the four winners!

MUSTAFA KEMAL DEMIR, MD

Dr Demir received his MD degree from Istanbul University School of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey. After a year of general practitioner experience, he trained as a resident in the Department of Radiology, Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine. Since then, he has practiced in Istanbul and is currently vice chief of the Department of Radiology, Haydarpasa Numune Research and Teaching Hospital in Istanbul, holding the title of associate professor of radiology. In his letter to me, Dr Demir noted that "Diagnosis Please cases encourage the readers to do further investigation" and that "Diagnosis Please simply creates curiosity." Dr Demir will receive a certificate (pictured herein) in recognition of his accomplishment.

MILTON RAFAEL FUENTEALBA, MD

Dr Fuentealba received his MD degree from the School of Medical Sciences, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Argentina. After a residency in diagnostic imaging at the Fundación Médica de Río Negro y Neuquén, associated with the Universidad Nacional de la Plata, he began practice in General Roca, Río Negro, Argentina. He is currently practicing in Cipolletti and Neuquén and will be moving to San Rafael, Province of Mendoza. In his letter to me, Dr Fuentealba stated that "arriving at the diagnosis of the cases has required thorough research work ... consulting numerous articles. ... This achievement has been of great importance for my self assessment." He further noted that searching the literature has taught him that the "final diagnosis does exist, and its pursuit is essential to a physician’s training." Dr Fuentealba will receive a certificate (pictured herein) in recognition of his accomplishment.

DOUGLAS SCOTT KATZ, MD

Dr Katz received his MD degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine. After an internship in internal medicine at Winthrop–University Hospital in Long Island, NY, he trained as a resident in diagnostic radiology at the Health Science Center at Syracuse, NY, where he was a co–chief resident. Dr Katz continued his training as a fellow in body imaging at the Department of Radiology, Stanford University Medical Center, Calif. He currently practices in the Department of Radiology, Winthrop–University Hospital, Mineola, NY, where he is vice chair for clinical research and education and director of body computed tomography. He also holds an appointment as an associate professor of clinical radiology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr Katz was an RSNA Editorial Fellow in 1999 and was appointed an associate editor for Radiology in 2001. In his letter to me, he stated that participating in Diagnosis Please "has been fun, challenging, educational." He further noted that Diagnosis Please "is most importantly an educational activity because a well-researched differential diagnosis and discussion are published with each answer." Diagnosis Please also "tests the knowledge of general and subspecialty radiologists." Dr Katz will receive a certificate (pictured herein) in recognition of his accomplishment.

STEFANOS B. LACHANIS, MD

Dr Lachanis received his MD degree from the Greek Armed Forces Medical School, which is affiliated with the Aristotelian University Medical School of Thessaloniki in Greece. After gaining experience in various medical departments as part of the Army internship program, he served as an Army doctor and then trained as a resident in radiology at both the 401 General Army Hospital and the Aretaion Hospital of the University of Athens, Greece. He continued his Army career and is currently director of magnetic resonance imaging at the Department of Radiology and program director at the 401 General Army Hospital in Athens. In his letter to me, Dr Lachanis mentioned that Diagnosis Please cases "have intrigued me since I first saw them in Radiology in 1998. I find them educating and challenging. They require perception, combining medical reasoning and literature search. They offered me a chance to expand my radiological knowledge." Dr Lachanis will receive a certificate (pictured herein) in recognition of his accomplishment.
