David H. Hussey, MD

Dr Hussey was born in Savanna, Illinois, the son of a general practice physician. He received his BS degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin in 1959, attended graduate school in biophysics at the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Md) for 1 year before going to medical school, and graduated from Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, in 1964.

His rotating internship was performed from 1964 to 1965, and he completed a general radiology residency at the University of Iowa (Iowa City) from 1965 to 1968. In that residency, he was significantly influenced by the leadership and wise counsel of Dr Howard Latourette, which led to a fellowship in radiation oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute (Houston) from 1968 to 1969.

He received his certification in general radiology in June 1969, having taken the written examination and the oral examination in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was recertified in radiation oncology in 1999.

Dr Hussey’s distinguished career began with an appointment to the faculty at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, a position that he filled from 1969 through 1983. He was initially appointed as an assistant professor but was ultimately named professor with tenure. His experience at that institution was dominated by his care of patients with thoracic neoplasms and, subsequently, by his care of patients with prostate and testicular cancer. He worked actively with Dr Gilbert Fletcher and the group in developing the fast neutron therapy program with a variable-energy cyclotron established at Texas A&M University (College Station, Tex), treating patients between 1972 and 1983. A cyclotron was ultimately installed at the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in 1980.

In 1984, he began private practice at St Paul’s Hospital and Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas, but ultimately in 1985 moved to become professor and head of the division of radiation oncology at the University of Iowa, where he replaced his first mentor, Dr Latourette. He was director of that program until 2000. He then spent a year on sabbatical in the office of the American Board of Radiology in Tucson, Arizona, where he worked on programs to develop interactive computerized case-management examinations. Subsequently, he accepted a position as professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2001.

Dr Hussey has been a major voice in radiation oncology from the very beginning of his career. He has served as president of the Gilbert H. Fletcher Society, president of the American Radium Society, president of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and currently President of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), having assumed that position in November 2004.

He has worked in other national organizations, including the Residency Review Committee for Radiation Oncology, as a trustee of the American Board of Radiology, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, the Inter-Society Council for Radiation Oncology, the Society for Chairmen of Academic Radiation Oncology Programs, and the American College of Radiology Commission on Radiation Oncology, as well as the American College of Radiology In-Service Examination Committee. He was an active leader in the Committee for Radiation Oncology Studies and the American Board of Medical Specialists.

His activities with the American Board of Radiology were directed toward the appropriate and proper examination for head and neck cancers in the written and oral examinations, but with major input into other examination categories, as well. He developed a tutorial for written examination item writers in radiation oncology, an orientation document for oral examiners of the American Board of Radiology, computerization of the genitourinary and head and neck oral examinations in radiation oncology, and the interactive computerized case-management examination program, as well as the recertification examination of the American Board of Radiology. He also served on the American Board of Radiology Executive Committee and the Electronic Testing Committee and as the chairman of the Building Committee for the new American Board of Radiology offices in Tucson.

Dr Hussey is a highly respected, internationally recognized authority in radiation oncology. His status and reputation are clearly demonstrated by his bibliography, which includes more than 38 chapters in books by leading authorities in radiation oncology, as well as more than 180 articles published in peer-reviewed journals. He has been an active writer in various publications to which he has written letters to the editor, and he has delivered a large number of invited lectures throughout the entire North American community, as well as abroad.

His research program has been directed toward clinical evaluation of fast neutron therapy supported by the National Cancer Institute and active participation in the development of the hospital-based neutron therapy program, also supported by the National Cancer Institute. He has been involved in a number of other projects that have ranged from a computerized introduction to radiation oncology to research studies in the use of pentoxifylline for the treatment of injury following radiation therapy, along with Radiation Therapy Oncology Group studies in head and neck cancer.

Dr Hussey represents the best in radiation oncology, being nationally and internationally recognized for his accomplishments and his contributions to the field of radiation oncology. It is, therefore, most fitting that he become President of the Radiological Society of North America. He has worked actively to strengthen the RSNA’s strategic planning process, served actively on many committees of the RSNA, and served with distinction on the RSNA Board of Directors. He is truly devoted to the goals, objectives, and strategic plans of the Society.
