Robert R. Hattery, MD

Dr Hattery was born in Phoenix, Arizona. After spending much of his youth in rural Indiana, he attended Indiana University, where he obtained his BA degree in 1961 and his MD degree in 1964. He completed an internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Tex, followed by 2 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. When he returned from duty, he moved to Rochester, Minn, where he completed his residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in June 1971.

On completion of his radiology residency, Dr Hattery accepted a position as coordinator and teacher of skeletal radiology and anatomy, pediatric radiology, and diagnostic radiology at Mayo Medical School and Mayo Clinic, where he would find a home for his entire distinguished academic career. He discovered his niche in diagnostic radiology starting in 1973, when he was appointed as an instructor. He quickly moved up the academic ladder at Mayo, reaching the rank of professor in 1982. In 1981, he was named chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, a post he held for the next 5 years. During his tenure as department chair, his administrative skills were recognized by his colleagues, who elected him chairman of the Mayo Group Practice Board. After serving in that capacity for only 2 years, he was named chairman of the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors. That position, which he held from 1994 to 1998, is essentially the chief executive officer for all of the Mayo Clinic's operations in Rochester. Bob's election serves as a great tribute to his administrative and interpersonal skills.

At present, Dr Hattery is the executive director of the ABR, a position he has held since 2002. He maintains professor emeritus status at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and is currently a clinical professor of diagnostic radiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he is involved in educating radiology and urology residents with regard to the genitourinary system.

Dr Hattery has devoted most of his career to imaging of the genitourinary tract, with particular emphasis on computed tomography (CT), CT urography, ultrasonography, and contrast agents. He has been a much sought-after speaker in the area of genitourinary imaging, having fulfilled visiting professorships and lectureships at institutions around the world, from Japan, China, and India to Germany, Spain, and Scotland. He has participated in 17 named lectures or visiting professorships. Dr Hattery's teaching abilities were recognized very early in his career. In 1973, he was selected by Mayo Clinic radiology residents as Teacher of the Year, and the medical students named him the Teacher of the Year in diagnostic radiology when he taught in the 3rd-year medical student curriculum. He was again named Teacher of the Year in diagnostic radiology in 2002, the year of his retirement from the Mayo Clinic.

His contributions to the literature are many. He has authored or coauthored more than 150 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters. Most relate to his interest and expertise in genitourinary radiology, although in recent years, in his position at the ABR he has been writing and speaking more frequently on resident training and maintenance of certification (MOC).

Dr Hattery has served on the editorial boards of RadioGraphics, Journal of Computed Body Tomography, Urologic Radiology, and Abdominal Imaging. In addition, he has contributed as a scientific reviewer to Radiology, RadioGraphics, Urology, Urologic Radiology, Investigative Radiology, Abdominal Imaging, and American Journal of Roentgenology. For RadioGraphics, he chaired a selection panel on genitourinary imaging from 1989 to 1994.

Bob Hattery has made vital contributions to many important radiology societies by volunteering his time, energy, and expertise. His contributions to the American College of Radiology, the Society of Uroradiology (SUR), the Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (SCBT/MR), the ABR, and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) are too extensive to enumerate. In both the SUR and SCBT/MR, Bob served on many committees and was recognized by his peers for his efforts with election to the presidency of both organizations.

Dr Hattery's activities for the ABR are numerous and significant. Having served as a guest examiner and chair of the genitourinary section, as well as a monitor of the written examination, he was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1995. He was a member of the board for 7 years, during which he served as secretary-treasurer (1996–1998), vice president (1998–2000), and president (2000–2002). While a member of the board, he was also a member of the Radiology Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and acted as liaison to the American Board of Medical Specialties. In 2002, with the retirement of M. Paul Capp, MD, Bob was selected the executive director of the ABR. During his term as executive director, he has spearheaded the MOC initiative and has striven to improve the educational experience of residents. For the future, he has a particular interest in working with the ABR to develop advanced technologies for primary certification testing and continuous quality-improvement initiatives and MOC processes.

An RSNA member for more than 20 years, Dr Hattery was elected to the RSNA Board of Directors in 1998, where he served as Liaison for Publications and Education/Communications, a position that involved oversight of Radiology, RadioGraphics, and RSNA News, as well as a number of committees, including the Publications Council and Public Information Committee. He served as chair of the Board in 2004, as president-elect in 2005 and became president at the Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill, in November and December 2005. As RSNA president, Dr Hattery plans to work with his colleagues to enhance the RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting, to develop MOC programs, to focus on multidisciplinary oncologic imaging technologic advancement, and to emphasize the need to embed continuous quality improvement principles for systems-based practice.

Bob has been honored by many organizations for his contributions. He received the Hartman Gold Medal of the Minnesota Radiological Society in 1998, the gold medal of the American Roentgen Ray Society in 2000, and the gold medal of the Society of Uroradiology in 2005.

Bob Hattery is, without question, one of the most outstanding radiologists of our time. His contributions to urologic radiology and to the education of residents and fellows and his commitment to continue educational opportunities for all radiologists are unequaled. As president of the RSNA and executive director of the ABR, he will be in a unique position to advance the education of residents, fellows, and practicing radiologists. We could not have a more capable, thoughtful, effective individual in such a position of influence. His integrity, fair-mindedness, dedication to quality, and work ethic provide the characteristics that our specialty needs to meet the challenges we will face during the coming decade. We are all fortunate that Bob has given of his time and talents to our specialty. In addition to the professional qualities that he brings to these positions, his personal characteristics enhance his effectiveness. He is kind, humble, forthright, articulate, pleasant, and caring.

I would be remiss if I did not mention Bob's love for his family. Diane, his wife of 44 years, is his constant companion, confidante, and advisor. She is a tremendous asset, a fact that Bob will readily confirm. They have two children, Angela and Mike, and four grandchildren, Travis, Emma, Logan, and Jack.

All radiologists should be pleased as Bob assumes the Presidency of the RSNA. He will be a major asset not only to the organization but to our specialty as well. Radiology will be better because of his leadership.
