Richard Louis Bean, MD, 1931–2005

Dr Bean was a lifetime member of Duval County Medical Society (Jacksonville), the founding president of the Memorial Medical Center medical staff (Jacksonville), and active on the staff of Baptist Medical Center (Jacksonville). He was a veteran of the Korean War.

Dr Bean was a founding partner of Drs Mori Bean and Brooks, PA, now one of the largest radiology practices in Florida. He made a major contribution to his specialty by organizing a radiology course for the American College of Emergency Physicians entitled "Radiology for the Emergency Physician." This material was incorporated into a textbook by the same name.

Dr Bean was involved in many community activities. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the blood donor program, a guardian ad litem for the juvenile court, founder of the Greater Jacksonville King Fish Tournament, and an active member of the Royal Order of Jesters.

It was never dull or boring when "raconteur" Dick Bean was in the room. He was one of radiology's great storytellers. Family, friends, and colleagues will miss his humor and his practical approach to life, which was "If you have a problem, get it out on the table and talk about it. That is the only way to make it go away."

He is survived by wife, Lana; children, Carol, Janice, Suzy, and Rick; and grandchildren, Katie and Tyler.
