Jacob Sosna, MD

The Eyler Editorial Fellowship lasts for 1 month, and the Fellowship for Trainees lasts for 1 week. Each fellow works closely with Radiology editor Anthony V. Proto, MD, in Richmond, Va, and RadioGraphics editor William W. Olmsted, MD, in Bethesda, Md, before heading to Oak Brook, Ill, to meet with members of the RSNA Publications, Advertising, and Marketing and Communications staff. The Eyler Fellow will spend the final week working with the journal editors at the RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill, from November 26 to December 1, 2006.

RSNA William R. Eyler Editorial Fellowship: Jacob Sosna, MD
Dr Sosna is acting chief for the computed tomography (CT) section and director of the Research and Imaging Laboratories at Hadassah and Hebrew University Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel, with which he has been affiliated since 1997. For the past 2 years, Dr Sosna has also served as an attending radiologist and visiting instructor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. He specializes in abdominal imaging.

In the past 4 years, Dr Sosna has served as a reviewer for four scientific journals: Radiology, the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the British Medical Journal, and the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine. He has published 19 articles and 13 reviews and has contributed to one book. In 2005, he received Radiology's Editor's Recognition Award for reviewing with Special Distinction. Dr Sosna hopes his editorial fellowship will enhance his skills as a researcher by giving him a different perspective on the process of peer review.

"I would like to see the workings of an editorial board from the other side," said Dr Sosna. "Usually we don't see how the process of peer review works from that side. I think this will make me a better writer and researcher. I also hope it will strengthen my reviewing, writing, and editorial abilities. I would like to bring these skills back" so that he can share them with his colleagues.

One area of particular interest to Dr Sosna is how technology affects manuscript editing. "I'm curious if it spreads knowledge faster or is simply more convenient," he said. He said he used to think electronic manuscript editing hastened the spread of knowledge but now believes it may just make it more expedient. "Data are often gathered years before publication," notes Dr Sosna.

Dr Sosna is an active member of the RSNA. From 2002 to 2004, he served as a member of the General Radiology panel for evaluation of scientific exhibits at the RSNA Annual Meeting, for publication in RadioGraphics. He also acted as a moderator at the Special Focus session, "Facing the New Threats of Terrorism: A Radiology Perspective." He is involved in the Israel Radiology Society, American Roentgen Ray Society, Israel Abdominal Radiology Society, and European Society for Gastrointestinal Radiology.

At Hebrew University, Dr Sosna teaches radiology, surgery, trauma, pediatrics, and internal medicine. In 2003, he received a grant from Philips Medical Systems for investigation of three-dimensional postprocessing of CT images.

If you are interested in applying for an RSNA William R. Eyler Editorial Fellowship or would like additional information, please contact Marian Strassner at RSNA Headquarters, 820 Jorie Blvd, Oak Brook, IL 60523; phone, (630) 571-7829; fax, (630) 571-7837; or e-mail, mstrassner@rsna.org. Information and an application are also available at http://rsna.org/publications/editorial_fellowships.cfm. Summaries of previous fellows' experience can be read at http://rsna.org/publications/editorial_fellows.cfm. Fellowship applications for 2007 will be accepted after January 1, 2007; the deadline is May 1, 2007.

RSNA Editorial Fellowship for Trainees: Anu Bansal, MD
Dr Bansal recently finished a residency in radiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. He is currently completing a 2-year fellowship in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. His research focused on targeted therapeutic drug delivery, enhancing tracking of regional drug and stem cell therapy through molecular imaging techniques, and optimizing general use of diagnostic imaging by creating outcome-validated decision rules. After obtaining his MD degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY, in 2001, he conducted his internship in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in New York, NY.

Anu Bansal, MD

Dr Bansal has a number of scientific publications to his credit, including articles in Radiology, the Journal of the American College of Radiology, the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Applied Radiology Online, Cell, and the Journal of Neuroscience.

During his fellowship at Mallinckrodt, Dr Bansal hopes to acquire clinical skills that will allow him to become a better neuroradiologist and neurointerventionalist, while also developing his research interests. "My research interests include molecular imaging and minimally invasive therapies, specifically in their application to neuroscience and neuroimaging," said Dr Bansal. He also has been working on several projects with the radiology department at Brigham and Women's Hospital related to utilization issues in radiology. During his fellowship, Dr Bansal plans to further develop his research interests. "I will be continuing some utilization research with collaborators at [Brigham and Women's Hospital] but also plan on trying to undertake some new neuroimaging research at [Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology]," he said.

Dr Bansal was attracted to radiology through an introduction to interventional neuroradiology. "I was interested in the neurosciences from a research and basic science perspective, and that really only left neuroradiology, neurosurgery, or neurology as clinical options," said Dr Bansal. After seeing a grand rounds presentation as a 3rd-year medical student, he became fascinated by the images of cerebral angiograms. "And now," he said, "I happily get to do them."

Trainees (residents, fellows) who have attended the Introduction to Research program at the RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting will be invited to apply for the RSNA Editorial Fellowship for Trainees. The deadline for completed applications for 2007 is April 1, 2007.
