A diverse cadre of 74 pediatric radiologists, medical physicists, radiologic technologists, researchers, pediatric subspecialists and vendors met to examine the risk of radiation exposure from fluoroscopic and interventional procedures, identify means by which to reduce ionizing radiation exposure, and explore future technologic modifications that could optimize imaging while further reducing radiation exposures.

Ruedi F. Thoeni and John P. Cello

While thickening of the colonic wall is a nonspecific sign on CT images and can be seen in inflammatory, ischemic, or neoplastic processes, some CT features such as amount of wall thickening, extent of disease, pericolonic reaction, presence of ascites, formation of fistulae, and type of complication can be used to narrow the differential diagnosis.

The lack of a formal organized funding program results in most radiology education research being noncohesive and institution-specific and involving small samples.

Screening clinical breast examination is complementary to screening mammography in demonstrating breast cancer in asymptomatic patients; clinical breast examination accounted for 14 (3%) of 453 cancers detected in our study population, and the cost of detecting these cancers was approximately $122,598 per cancer.

Our study findings demonstrate that quantified breast density is a more accurate and reproducible measure of breast density than radiologist estimates derived by using the conventional qualitative Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System density categories.

In our pilot study, we demonstrated that a Bayesian network can (a) predict the likelihood that microcalcifications at mammography are malignant, (b) perform as well as a subspecialty-trained mammographer in estimating the probability of malignancy, and (c) improve the positive predictive value of the decision to perform biopsy.
