The Purpose of Supplemental Material

The purpose of online-only publication of material that is supplemental to an article in the journal is to take full advantage of the medium of the Internet to allow publication of material that cannot be accommodated in print, such as the following:

Materials prepared and submitted according to the following instructions will be considered for online publication.

How to Submit Supplemental Material

Supplemental material must be in electronic form and can be submitted at Manuscript Central (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rad) along with the main article. Movies, audio, text, tables, digital images, and applets (computer programs) should be submitted as separate files with the appropriate file extension (eg, .mov for Quicktime movies, .doc for Word files). Authors must be certain that all of the submitted files run on UNIX, Windows NT/XP/Vista, and current Macintosh platforms. Supplemental material should accompany the rest of the original submission, and be uploaded in Manuscript Central as "Multimedia." Permission letters required for any of the supplemental material must also be included.

Preparation of Supplemental Material

Text

Text may be submitted in MS Word format or as rich text.

Images

Images should be in either GIF or JPEG format at a compression that will provide a display resolution conveying the required information. In general, JPEG is preferred for color images. Images embedded in text documents will not be accepted unless they are also submitted as separate files.

Each supplemental image and movie requires a legend, and the image and associated legend text should be included in an accompanying text document.

Movies

Movie files will be accepted in the widely implemented standard formats MPEG (.mpg, .mpeg), QuickTime (.qt, .mov), AVI (.avi), and Shockwave Flash (.swf). Audio should be in common digital formats such as .wav, .au, or .qt. A variety of software tools are available (public domain and commercial) for creating and viewing the above-named movie and audio formats.

Each movie requires a legend, and the movie and legend text should be part of the submission. File compression and/or dimension limits should be used on movies to keep them at a reasonable size (less than 20 MB), unless there is a compelling reason for larger files.

Equations

Mathematical equations and expressions can be submitted as images or as simple text, if possible.

Tables

Tables should be submitted as text in Word. If the tables are complex, they may be submitted as graphics files (GIF or JPEG format), although authors will be responsible for making any requested changes.

Java Applets

The Java programming language can be used to create applets, or existing applets can be included in the manuscript, that will extend the capabilities of a browser through animation and interactivity. Java applets may, for instance, allow users to manipulate images in a "three-dimensional" fashion, such as rotating the images so that they may be viewed from any angle, as well as offering animation within the HTML document.

When submitting Java applets, authors should provide the following information:

Applets must be written to conform to the Java 1.0 API specification
